Mark Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. The New Testament concept closely parallels that of the Old Testament. John writes: "Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth." Believers need to share with those in need, whether that need is for food, water, lodging, clothing, healing, or friendship (Matt ; Rom ).

The book is concerned about false teaching, using errant angels and Balaam as examples. Judgment is delayed for them, however, to give an opportunity for repentance. The delay is also explained by the fact that "with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day.".   My previous post on the new commandment left me with one regret—that I didn’t explore the relationship of this new love command to the love commands of the Old Testament. The current debate over Andy Stanley’s view of the Old Testament in general and of the new commandment in particular, expressed in his recent book Irresistible, make this a . The Old Testament charge was to "love your neighbor as yourself" (Lev ). But Jesus gave his disciples a new command with a radically different motive: "Love each other as I have loved you" (John ). Paul affirms that "the entire law is summed up in a single command: Love your neighbor as yourself'" (Gal ).

People often wonder what are the commands that Jesus commanded us to teach. As you look over this list you will see that God instructs us. These themes are covered from a variety of perspectives, showing the impact of Jesus' teaching throughout the New Testament.

Love in the New Testament. What makes the New Testament new is the appearance of the Son of God on the scene of human history. In Jesus Christ we see as never before a revelation of God. As he said, “If you have seen me, you have seen the Father” (John ; cf.
